PHILLIP and LACEY

MULTIPURPOSE ASSISTANCE DOG

This picture is of Phillip on his first day of first grade.  It may look like a picture that is 'nothing special' but to us - it's a miracle!  You see - a year ago (pre-Lacey) Phillip didn't WALK down stairs - he sat and 'slid' down them.  Now - with Lacey by his side he walks right down!  Also, it shows the faith Phillip has in Lacey, because as soon as he gets to stairs or un-even turf - he reaches for his 'puppy'  (that's what he calls her)! Also - the fact that he is standing there letting me take the pictures is something special in and of itself!  A year ago, he would not sit still for a picture - but NOW with Lacey by his side - he is SO PROUD of her, that he sits (or stands) still and lets me take as many as I want! Thanks so much for providing us with Lacey - who assists Phillip in walking down stairs, teaches him FAITH in another being, and also allows me to be "snap happy"!!

The second picture is nothing short of WONDERFUL! It's a picture of Phillip - hugging Lacey - of his own accord. This is something that very seldon happens to US (his family) - so when I saw him go over to Lacey and give her such a big, loving hug - I had to snap a photo. Phillip is not spontaneously affectionate often, and the fact that he chose to 'love on' Lacey for seemingly no reason, all on his own - meant the world to me. I don;t think I wold care if she never listened to me again - as long as she continues to be Phillp's best friend - that is good enough for me. (Not that she does not listen, she does!) I don;t know what we would do without her!

The last one is one of my favorite pictures because it displays one of the biggest changes in our lives.  This picture is of Phillip - asleep, in his own room, on a bed,( with Lacey).  This picture shows the biggest change  because before Lacey - we spent hours trying to get Phillip to bed almost every night.  He would get out of bed and lie in the floor and kick or beat the door until we came in (over and over and over) and put him back in bed.  Eventually he would fall asleep behind the bedroom door. Now, with Lacey - he goes to bed happily -with his girl by his side!  No more kicking and beating the door, no more frustrated Mommy & Daddy going in and out of his room for hours after bedtime - just sleeping little boy & best friend! The picture also portrays the love that Lacey feels for Phillip - because she is sleeping, curled into a little space - beside her boy . . . when there is an entire twin size bed (and her kennel "den") right next to her.  She chose - on her own accord - to sleep beside her best pal! No more long, aggravating nights thanks to Lacey.  No more tired and sleepy boy thanks to Lacey . . . Thanks to Karen & 4 Paws!!!!!!!!!  Thank you! Sincerely, a well rested family in NC - the Dixon's!

AIDEN and CODY

SEIZURE ASSISTANCE DOG with FACILITATED ALERT

Cody does have an alert now- Cody gets hyper, anxious, gets right under my feet- as early as 20-30 minutes before Aiden's seizures up to the seizure.  he's doing a great job of laying with Aiden during and after the seizure...once I calm him down and let him know everything is ok.We had a trip to the ER for a prolonged seizure (45 minutes) Cody was great at the ER and of coarse everyone loved him to pieces.  He was not with Aiden when this seizure started.. Aiden was at preschool.  boy did that help us in our push to get Cody into the school... we shall see.

Picture 1 & 2:  Aiden & Cody at training in Ohio.  Aiden had a focal seizure during training and Cody was there to comfort him. Cody laid with Aiden until he woke up.  They had only met 4 days earlier.
Picture 3: Aiden and Cody vacationing in Tucson AZ. Picture 4: Aiden and Cody Easter Sunday 2007. Practicing his sit command and enjoying the beautiful day.  We used to have to limit Aiden's time outdoors because the sunlight seemed to provoke seizures, but with Cody around they don't occur as often as they had before Cody joined our family. Picture 5: Aiden and Cody waking up in the morning.  For the first time in 3 years Aiden sleeps in his own bed with Cody by his side. Mom and Dad are not as afraid to leave Aiden alone now that Cody is with us.  Cody has had a calming effect on our family and Aiden's seizure activity has decreased.

God Bless You,
Alison

JUSTICE, NOELLE, and REAGAN

AUTISM ASSISTANCE DOG

We’re now in our third year of being Reagan’s family.  Having two kids with autism spectrum disorders certainly introduces a world of unpredictability, but Reagan adapts so well!  Whereas his primary job when our daughter was young was acting as an anchor when we tethered our then 3-year-old to him, he seems to know now that his job is more to keep a close eye on his kids.  Our son still holds his “special leash” when we’re out, as you can see from this picture of a field trip Justus went on this spring.  But Reagan will keep pulling on the leash I hold until he is “heeling” to his kids in the instance they’re not physically connected to him.Justus went through a phase this past year where he perseverated on a couple negative dog traits.  He became constantly worried that Reagan would either vomit or urinate in the house.  Sadly, that affected their working relationship as well.  But over the last month, they’ve become good friends again.  Reagan cherishes the time he spends working with his boy.  And on vacation to Wisconsin’s Northwoods this summer, he was a huge reason our kids were able to spend an entire day on a pontoon boat!  If they got antsy, he was there for them to settle down with. When we’re home, Reagan’s relaxed, but always willing to “find” the kids when asked.  When I jingle that harness or when our van stops at our destination, he starts whining with anticipation.  And when the tracking collar and leash come out for practicing, we can hardly contain him!We taught Reagan high-5 this summer, and other kids love it.  Now that school’s started again, he’s the star of the show.  We walk to and from school together and Reagan goes on field trips with Justus.  Reagan just soothes Justus when we go to stressful places – doctor appointments, pharmacies, hospitals, stores, theaters, museums – you name it!

I don’t think it would be possible for our family to love him any more than we do.  He’s just the best!

We were vacationing in Wisconsin’s Northwoods.  Hubby rented a pontoon boat from the campground we were at and we spent the day on the Eagle River Chain of Lakes.  It really was perfect.  Swimming, lunch on the boat, Noelle even took a snooze after lunch!  Warm but not too hot, nice breeze.  Loved the whole thing.  I didn’t think the kids could pull off such a lengthy outing, but I’m so glad Pete insisted we give it a try!  We weren’t sure how Reagan would feel about his first boat trip, but he was fantastic.  After about 5-10 minutes, he was comfortable enough to just lay down – even did “lap” and “kisses” with Justus!  Here they are, hanging out.  I’m telling you fundraising and waiting families – these dogs are amazing!

JONATHAN and LADY

AUTISM ASSISTANCE DOG

Jonathan is dx'd PDD-NOS and is in the 7th grade. About half inclusion and half resource at school. Lady does not attend with him because he doesn't have/need a personal aide at this point. If he needed Lady at school we would get one for him, but in Jr. High independence is what he wants!! As long as he can handle it I am great with that. You will notice that he has a t-shirt on with Lady's picture and name. He wears this t-shirt whenever he would like to have her with him but for whatever reason cannot(we actually have 2 t-shirts so I don't get caught when I am behind on laundry!HA!). This has been a great tool for us...he says "It keeps her close to his heart!" How can you say no to that!              Stefanie

we have had Lady now 2 1/2 years ( I don't know where the time has gone)!  Jonathan was just invited by his regular ed Social Studies teacher (he is in 7th grade) to bring Lady into school and do a demo for the class.  We made note cards and he did an "Oral Report" and then showed the Fox news clip from this summer, showed off her skills and tricks then very proudly asked, "Does anyone have any questions for me?"  It was truly amazing to see him in action.

10-15-2007 I just had to share a cute story! Today was a day off school for Jonathan (13 yrs old, autistic) and so our morning routine was different...meaning I didn't have to get up so early! However, Lady didn't get the message and she started barking from her kennel in Jonthan's room at 7:15...I assured her we were good and didn't have school (like she understands when I have "conversations" with her!HA!) and went back to bed...then at 7:35 she came into my room and climbed half up on my bed (she isn't allowed on my bed!!) and would not let me alone till I got up. I really think she was sure Jonathan was going to miss the bus because he goes out to the bus stop at 7 :35!!! Just amazing these dogs are!! Now if Jeremy would just train my kids the same!!!HA!HA!HA!

NICHOLAS and CHARLIE

AUTISM ASSISTANCE DOG

We received my son Nick's dog in Feb. of this year...Charlie Too, a beautiful dog which we couldn't be happier with. Nick and Charlie were having a rough time bonding mostly because of the severity of Nick's autism. He would hug Charlie really tightly on the rear and then hit him sometimes. He doesn't know how to show affection very well. Anyway...this evening Nick went to sleep on the couch (he has to take medication to help him sleep) and was there a few minutes before I moved him upstairs to bed. I answered the phone and sat down beside him on the couch. Charlie was lying down on his "place" resting just across the room. We have suspected that Nick had sleep apnea, but we aren't sure; he has several medical concerns. He was breathing really erratically and did that wierd breathing. I was talking and didn't really pay attention, but Charlie all of a sudden sat straight up and was watching Nick. He then rushed over to him and began to nuzzle his face and lick him until Nick let out a huge breath. He had stopped breathing and Charlie sensed it!! I was so overwhelmed. To my knowledge Charlie was not trained for that type of thing. Yes, he was to nuzzle, but not for the breathing thing. It made me realize more than ever that Charlie has a HUGE place in our house!! Nick loves him more than anything and must have him in the morning and he has to be with me when I pick him up from his short time at school. We love him so much!!!       Michelle

SAM and JOHN BOY

AUTISM ASSISTANCE DOG

The first picture is This is John Boys 2nd birthday.  The kids insisted we  celebrate.  He did not eat the cake. The second picture is John Boy hoping climbed into Sam's bed hoping to encourage him to get up faster and feed him. The last picture is Sam and John Boy at the condo on vacation. It was the first time we were able to walk down the beach together.  In previous years, Sam would take off into the ocean the second we stepped on the sand.  It really was the best vacation the kids and I have ever had together.

Sam has been really great this holiday season which is very unusual.  We haven't had nearly the meltdowns and he has made some good progress on his IEP, which is typically not the case. When I picked him up from school the other day for the dentist, they said all day long he had been pointing to his schedule and asking "car? dog?"  He will actually tell people his dog's name!  He doesn't even tell people his own name.  I just think that is so cool.
