When
we were in desperate need for a Labradoodle puppy for 7 year old Jovon
who needs an Autism Assistance Dog and best buddy it was Sage to the
rescue. Jovon's family has dog allergies and Labradoodles are one breed
that lives well with people who have allergies to most other breeds of
dogs. Not only was she the sudden miracle we needed to make Jovon's
dream of a friend who would love him just the way he is, but Sage in and
of herself is a miracle as well.
This is Sage's Story, written by the Allgeier Family and tells of
Sage's miraculous start in life.
Sage, we
believe, was sent to us by God. I'm not an extremely religious person,
but I do believe in God. We were originally on a waiting list for 1 Labradoodle
puppy. Shortly after our puppy Buddy's litter was born, one of his
litter mates was diagnosed with a heart condition called PDA. The
breeder posted this info on her website informing people about this
little female pup who needed surgery to correct this problem ASAP, or
she wouldn't live to be a year old. Of course, I was touched by this as
I love dogs, and I am also a pediatric home health care nurse, who takes
care of critically ill children everyday, allot of whom have very
similar conditions as this little pup had. However, the surgery was
expensive, and with two children, Jacob, 8
and Lauren, 4, and with a new, (expensive), puppy coming home,
along with the two older dogs that we already had, Dude, 13 and Millie,
9, I knew that we wouldn't be able to take that challenge on. Then, a
miracle happened. Someone just donated $500 to help to pay for the
surgery. I was amazed at that person's generosity! Then, a little 9 year
old girl named Sage, took it upon her self to raise almost $700 to help
pay for the surgery. Still, nobody wanted to bring this puppy home to
see to it that she got this operation that she needed. It was then that
I knew that we had more than enough love for one more puppy. (our hearts
have always been bigger than our wallets). So, we agreed to take her
home and we named her "Sage" after that
amazing little girl that raised all that money for a puppy that wasn't
even hers. Sage got her surgery soon after we bought her home. Within a
week, actually. And she came through with flying colors! I actually
would have to put her in her cage to keep her from "overdoing
it!"
She is a wonderful dog. She is so smart, and very sweet, and she just
loves affection. And, as you can tell. she has spent lots of time with
children, and absolutely loves them. We were going to keep her. We had
never considered donating her. Then, my daughter came home from
preschool with a paper with information about a little girl that lives
in our community, that
needed a seizure alert dog. And then I knew. Sage wasn't our dog at all. She was passing through us on her way to a child
who needed her.
She just needed us to love her and care for her so that she would be
able to do this very important job! But
when I called the phone number on the paper, 4 Paws For Ability TM, as soon
as I mentioned that Sage was a Labradoodle, they told me about Jovon and
I knew in my heart that this was meant to be. It was hard for me to tell
the kids. I got teary eyed every time I thought about it. But after a
couple of days, my husband and I sat them down and told them about Jovon
and how much he needed Sage. we even showed him his picture on the
website, and I am proud to say, that they both understood why we needed
to let her go. We will miss her. But in my heart, I know that she
will have a very happy life. What a journey she's had already!!!!
Sincerely,
